Estimated Time: Day 1: 30 minutes, Day 2 - 21: 10 minutes
Summary:
Students measure the effects of different amounts of water on plants (grown from seeds or starts) to investigate the relationship between the amount of water and the height of plants.
Learning Goals:
Students will learn the vocabulary: changed variable and measured variable
Students will carry out a plant investigation by measuring growth over time
Students will make connections between how the amount of water affects the growth of young plants
Materials Needed:
Access to investigation data chart:
Pencil
6 Seeds packet or starts (starts costs more money but speeds up the growing process).
You can buy seeds at many stores. Starts can be found in a gardening section. Ask around your neighborhood, someone might have a handful of extra seeds to share!
Dirt (can use from your backyard)
“Sunny” area (near a window is best!) inside your house up high enough to keep away from pets and younger children
Tray with lip (to prevent dirt and water from spilling)
6 Planting pots (can use large, empty, clean food containers or an egg carton)
Tablespoon
Ruler or tape measure with millimeters
Paper to journal and sketch on
