Ready to Rock

Target Age Group/Grade: 5th-6th

Estimated Time: 45 minute lesson

Summary:

Rocks are all around us, make up the very ground we live on, and have many benefits yet are rarely examined by the vast majority of people. Through this lesson students will identify and classify common rocks in their ecosystem by making observations using smell and touch.


Learning Goals:

  1. Students will collect and examine different types of rocks using multiple senses.

  2. Students will analyze, identify, and classify rock samples using charts and models.

  3. Students will research practical uses of rocks.


Materials Needed:

  • Rock identification guides (see last page)

  • Outdoor space to collect 2-5 rock samples to be examined

  • Pencil/Pen

  • Paper

  • Hard surface such as a book or clipboard

  • Optional:

    • Printer if you would like to print out any of the resources provided.

    • Hand lens or magnifying glass to examine physical attributes.

    • Past knowledge on the rock cycle and types of rocks.
