Soil Sifters

Summary:

Everyday we travel about our busy lives, many times, without taking a second to ponder, “what exactly am I standing on.” Soil is in fact the link between the air, water, rocks, and organisms around us. In this lesson we will be identifying different types of soil, what resides in it, and some of the benefits/restrictions of different types of soil.


Learning Goals:

  • Students can classify sediments from observation

  • Identify advantages and disadvantages of various soil types and how that relates to life it can sustain

  • Construct claim and evidence statements based upon data collected

Materials Needed:

  • Digging tool (spade, shovel, spoon, hands)

  • 3-5 containers for soil (yogurt containers, empty jars, cups, etc)

  • Paper + hard surface to write on

  • Pen/Pencil
