Updated: May 31, 2020

Contributed by: Kyleen Ellingsen

Target Age Group/Grade: 3nd-6th grade

Estimated Time: 60 minutes

Summary:

Practice observing and graphing data to predict shadow length. Students measure the length of shadows at different times in a sunny day to investigate the relationship between time of day and length of shadows.

Learning Goals:

  • Students will learn the vocabulary: changed variable and measured variable

  • Students will carry out a mathematical investigation by measuring shadows.

  • Students will make connections between how the time of day affects the lengths of shadows

Materials Needed:

  • Access to investigation data graph

  • Paper to journal and sketch on

  • Pencil and 3 different coloring utensils

  • 3 tall/thin objects (easy to measure their shadow...can be a lamppost, chair, street sign, upright broom, figurines, favorite toys, etc.)

  • Clock/phone timer

  • Measuring tool (use a measuring tape, ruler, or even a pair of shoes)
